PM Kisan Yojana: If you come from a farming family or have a connection to rural land, you know that Budget Day is a day full of optimism and anticipation rather than just another news event.

Farmers who work in the fields tune in to their radios, cell phones, or televisions to hear what the government has planned for them each year when the budget is presented.

The climate surrounding Budget 2026 was similar, particularly with regard to the PM Kisan Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.

Farmers hoped that this time, the government would boost the amount given under this scheme in light of the growing inflation. However, many were dismayed by the image that surfaced following the budget.

PM Kisan Yojana: What is the scheme and why is it important?

The PM Kisan Yojana is one such scheme that has promised to transfer funds directly into the accounts of farmers. As per this scheme, eligible families of farmers are provided a total of ₹6,000 per year as financial support. This is provided in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each, directly into their accounts. There are no middlemen involved in this process, and this is what makes it so special for farmers.

Though this amount may not be very substantial for small farmers, it does help in times of need for meeting expenses such as seeds, fertilisers, or other small expenditures.

What changed and what didn’t in Budget 2026

The government did not alter the amount allocated under the PM Kisan Yojana in the Budget 2026. This implies that farmers will still get ₹6,000 a year. The government underlined that although the decision to raise the amount has not yet been made, the program will continue.

Many farmers were unhappy with this choice because farming has become much more expensive in recent years. Many people feel that the ₹6,000 aid is insufficient because the cost of labour, diesel, fertiliser, and pesticides is continuously increasing.

Farmers’ demands and the government’s stance

Before the budget, farmer organisations and representatives from the agricultural sector had presented their demands to the government. They demanded an increase in the PM Kisan amount as the effect of inflation was being felt. Along with that, demands for reduced agricultural loans, tax exemptions, and easy access to long-term loans were also made.

But in Budget 2026, there were no direct announcements made regarding these demands. This is why some farmer organisations have termed it an incomplete budget. They think that although the government has given them relief by continuing the scheme, they have not done the needful to fulfil the demands of the farmers.

What does this mean for the average farmer?

If I were to explain this to a friend, I would say that it is a relief that the PM Kisan Yojana has not been discontinued in the Budget 2026. However, the farmers’ hopes have not been fulfilled by the amount is the same. Farmers who were hoping for more help will have to wait a bit longer.

However, it is also true that the scheme’s greatest strength is still the direct transmission of funds to bank accounts via Direct Benefit transmission. At least there is the guarantee of timely delivery of the promised funds.

Inflation and the reality of farming

Agriculture in the current scenario is not only about toil; it has also become a question of cost control. In this situation, the support amount of ₹6,000 sometimes appears to be less to fulfill the requirements of the farm. This is why the farmers demanded that the government rethink this amount.

Budget 2026 has clarified that the government is currently in a position where it wants to maintain stability, and later on, significant changes can be expected.

What can be expected in the future?

It wouldn’t be incorrect to suggest that the PM Kisan Yojana might be discussed once more in the future. The government would be under more pressure to enhance this program if inflation and farming expenses keep rising. Farmers will have to keep using the same amount for the time being.
